RedrebelA lot of you would put other players in other positions, but this players are ones that I think are the most reasonable to be able to play this formation. This formation is very good for wing-play and I think Manchester United would be very successful with this formation. The way I arranged this players are 3 center-backs, 2 center-midfielders, two outside midfielders, two support strikers, and a main striker. What do you think? And remember playing with a back 3 is not suicide and it is not rocket science or something very hard to do.

trbwsNo Tevez? , and also Giggs changed his position to CMF, and Yes he can play those position though. but what really Making ManU attack well with Evra, I think Evra being in a Formation might be genious. But not that much Nice formation Mate.

RedrebelLike you said Evra is an offensive player and in a 3-4-3 the back 3 have to be defensively minded or else bad things can happen. Imagine if Evra plays as right center-back and attacks and loses the ball. The effect is only 2 man are going to be left in the last line of defense and lots of goals would be scored.

GeorgieWasTheBestSo, Sir Alex Ferguson has been our manager since 1986. That's 22 years at the helm. He won CL twice, EPL 10 times and other numerous smaller trophies. Why on earth didn't he play with a 3 men defence for once, if it's not rocket science? Do you reckon you know football better than him?

01.11.2008

RedrebelYou also have to understand that managers have different views of football and believe different things. Managers don't become successfull and don't make a team great just by choosing a formation there is more to it than a 4-4-2. Plus, teams have been relegated using a back 4 so having 4 defenders doesn't guaranteed you success.

01.11.2008

GeorgieWasTheBestYes it doesn't gurantee anything; it's a minimum requirement. Show me one manager in major leagues(English,Spanish,Italian)who plays 3 men defenders and won anything. There's none. Does this tell you anything?

01.11.2008

RedrebelWell, if you mean today present there are not that many, but here are some managers that have been champions using 3 defenders. Johan Cruijff during the 1990s with Barcelona won 4 La Liga titles and 1 champions league. Louis van Gaal with Ajax in which he won champions league 1 time and 3 national titles. Felipe Scolari with Brazil in 2002 World Cup. Mircea Lucescu with Besiktas in 2002-03. Alberto Zaccheroni with AC Milan. If you look you can see that many teams have been champions using three defenders not far back, but I must guess that your argument might be that football changes as years pass by. But, the thing is it wasn't 50 years ago it was about 15 years ago the most. And if you say that 3 defenders are no longer being used in major leagues. My understanding of your major leagues is the English, Spanish, and Italian league which you just mentioned. But, if you look at more different leagues there are teams using 3 defenders and are successful with it.

GeorgieWasTheBestGet your facts right: Barcelona played a 4 men defense in 90s: Beguiristain, Koeman, Nadal, Ferrer from left to right. That doesn't look 3 to me.

It was Pareira who played with 3 central defenders not Scolari and even then it was a 5 men defense with Roberto Carlos and Cafu.

05.11.2008

RedrebelJust because they played with 4 men it doesn't mean they never played with 3. Scolari did use three center-backs, and a 5 man defense. So, do not say that Barcelona never used a 3 man defense while its on the records.

05.11.2008

ZolaI don't think any team would consider a 3 men defense in the Premiership. The pace of the game is just too high and no one can afford poor area coverage.

07.11.2008

RedrebelYou are correct Zola. You said that probably no team would consider a 3 men defense in the Premiership because of the pace. But, than why not use a 5 men defense? Another question is how fast is the pace? Is the pace so fast that is mandatory to have a back 4 and impossible to play with a back 3? The answer is no. The pace of English football is faster than most leagues no doubt about that, but not by much. So, playing with a back 3 shouldn't be a problem if you know how to play on one.
