mitonobThis is the titular formation of Argentina to the first match of the next WC.

Coach Maradona use a very typical (and italian) 4-4-2 system. Maradona plays with four fullbacks on the defense, two pivotes on the midfield and two side midfielder on each band. Maradona learn this way to play when he played for Napoli in the 80's.

lanonaFCis very defensive !!!

mitonobYes! Too defensive for the argentinian potencial!

Jaap StamFunny, you guys say that. I was going to suggest that it was not defensive enough.

Demichelis did not impress me with his form with Bayern. Heinze is not what he was couple of years ago. Samuel and Mascherano are the only two players who have defensive venom and I am not sure they'll be enough to compansate for 5 attacking minded players.

nvrWhy no Tevez? I'd probably pull Messi to where Gutierrez is and have Tevez up front.

mitonobI agree with you nvr but this is the squad that Maradona prefer.

Also, I believe that Argentina needs wing backs like Zanetti or Clemente Rodriguez.

willieFunny how quickly things change. From 2007 we were dubbed quite possibly the best team in the world to 2010 where we wonder which round will we be eliminated. So many options to switch! Add G. Milito, Zanetti, Riquelme, Cambiasso, bring back Aimar & have the formation change to a 4-3-1-2 or a 4-2-2-2. oh well.

foxrocksUsing tough centre backs in both full back positions makes this a rather rugged lineup, to say the least!

Even though he has been great since returning to Argentina, I think it may be unwise to rely so much on the old legs of Juan Veron. Maradona's unflinching faithfulness to Jonas Gutierrez is also a bit bemusing, at least to people in England who see him plying his trade in the Championship!

I would have thought that, on paper at least, their strongest lineup is:

------------------Romero---------------
---------------------------------------
Zanetti----G Milito----Samuel----Heinze
---------------------------------------
----------------Mascherano-------------
-------Lucho/Veron-------Cambiasso-----
---------------------------------------
---------Messi-----------Di Maria------
-----------------Higuain---------------

This should, in theory, help get the best out of Messi, since it is basically the same role he plays for Barcelona. The midfield is robust enough not to get bossed about by anybody. The potential down side is the rather ancient full backs!

ZolaMaradona didn't name Zanetti and Cambiasso in his provisional squad. He must be on drugs...

willieArgentina could actually progress further because w/ basically 5 always defending as the fullbacks wont attack like they used to, counter attacks will be easier to break apart. Remember, in the Copa against Brazil Zanetti & Heinze would fly forward & the center backs would push higher to limit the space between them & the midfield, allowing the opposition to get behind them. Mexico did this in the semis but their chances flew by & Argentina sunk em. At least we have a cohesive group that are familiar w/ each other. Though two years ago we were much at our prime, here we have a more solid group. It won't look spectacular, but that's what happens when pretty football never brings back the silverware.

hmrkzthey will play in 3x5x2

Ross3GThis formation looks very defensive. The Argentine attack has huge potential, that should be used if they wish to progress further in the tournament. I like the look of the back 4, however, I think Maradona's been right so far in this tournament to adopt the 4-4-3 formation. Two defensive midfielders in the form of Mascherano & Veron aren't needed in a team like Argentina's. A front three of Tevez, Higuain & Messi looks strong, however after Aguero's second-half performance against Greece, Tevez should be fearing for his position.
