I think England should go with this against France. 4-5-1 with Gerrard and Wilshere acting as defensive midfielders when needed and central mids on the attack.
Adam Johnson should tuck in with Ashley Cole bombing forward, Walcott will provide the pace on the right. Wilshere and Gerrard should act as the main playmakers looking for Carroll, Walcott and Johnson with Rooney linking up the play.
This team has great balance with Carroll providing aerial threat and hold up play with a central triangle of Gerrard, Wilshere and Rooney providing creativity. Also it would be good on the break using Walcott Rooney and A. Johnson, Cole for quick counter attacks.
Is Rooney out of injury? Even if he is, he didn't touch a ball in weeks, it would be unfair to give him a start.
One of the El City boys, Milner or Barry, to start in Gerard's place, Gerard to Rooney's position and that would be my starting line up.
Oh yeah I forgot about Rooney, I agree Barry swap with Gerrard and Gerrard swaps with Rooney.
