gazlfcforeverBasically Chelsea's only option is to play three central defensive midfielders. Lampard isn't the player he was (Sorry Chelsea fans) playing him in a trio defensive midfielders would enable you to keep possession and spread the play to the fullbacks and allow them to roam forward.

The three strikers basically rotate the false 9 role making them very difficult to mark and because of the defensive mids allow them to play higher up the pitch. They all need to be free flowing though and use the channels and avoid staying in central areas together.

lankyguy007Little width further up the field, centre midfielders seem to defensive and not much link between the defence if Lampard was to play the role you have showed. Full backs have to work very hard and against two strikers the centre backs will get pulled out wide if the two strikers take advantage of the full backs moving so high up the pitch. A compact, organised and defensive 4-4-2 with a bit of pace could beat this team.

lankyguy007And Torres playing out wide wouldn't work for me and even if the three strikers were interchangeable, they would have to be very organised.

mateus21Chelsea needs a good playmaker, to play between the two strikers and the three central midfielders( Lampard, Essien and Ramires)

RFMHChelsea lack creativity and width. Luis is a quality signing and Torres will come good. But they needed a winger and some creativity more than a finisher I feel.

NovoxAs posted above, Chelsea's main issue is lack of creativity and players that can create chances.

But the issue with the formation here is the fact that the team is seperated in two area's, and there will definatly be an issue of fluidity and the team will appear disconnected from the attack. There is no link players in what you have provided us :)

rahulcfc26chelsea is playing much better playing a 4 4 2/ 4 4 1 1/ 4 2 2 2. call it whatever you may. it's still narrow but the link up between the front players and lampard is very evident and dangerous. the key is to get lampard dictating play and to do that essien and ramires is very important because lampard cannot run the midfield on his own without someone else doing all the running for him and essien and ramires can do that perfectly. then the trio of malouda, torres and anelka can link up with lampard.

rahulcfc26all chelsea players are quite suited for a 4 4 2 / 4 4 1 1/ 4 2 2 2 and as it has been pointed in this discussion before, chelsea lack a natural attacking midfielder who can play in the 'hole'.

but they've got two pretty much world class central midfield players in lampard and essien, a willing runner in ramires and flair and pace on the left from malouda/ zhirkov.

and then they have four strikers to choose from. that's the way to play in most games imo but in tight champions league games, they can go back to 4 3 3 and play mikel as the holding mid.
