iNickStuffThe predicted formation for the 2011-12 football season. A 4-2-3-1 formation that consists of Chelsea's best eleven. Ashley Cole, John Terry, David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic in the four-man defence. Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel in the centre of the park, whilst Florent Malouda/Daniel Sturridge, Lampard and Kalou in the final third with Fernando Torres and/or Didier Drogba spearheading the top of the field.

ZolaBut isn't this the line-up from yesterseason? No transfers?

I am not sure that Sturridge will be happy to be used as a sub and at the wing after the spell he had with Bolton.

iNickStuffWhere are Chelsea's transfers? Sturridge has been adopted at left-wing for the England U21's team, and the same may follow suit for him at Chelsea, when a new manager is installed and whether or not he chooses to play a 4-2-3-1.

ZolaI am waiting that too. Bidding has started with a cheeky one on Modric. I reckon more serious ones are to follow.

iNickStuffHopefully they will be forwards, as wingers is what Chelsea lack in my opinion. Malouda, Kalou and probably Yossi Benayoun included are not good enough to really supply some wing-play.

srussell541Yeah but this gives the same problem last year that Chelsea had: no width in play. Sturridge is not going to want to provide width, he is going to want to come inside and combine with Drog/Torres. Furthermore, if you are relying on Cole to provide width in the attack, he is going to be caught out of position defensively, seeing as Sturridge/Malouda won't be dropping back to help. Essien or Luiz could flare out wide to help defensively, but with teams like Manchester United who have actual wingers to occupy that space or forwards to like to run in to space like Hernandez , you are asking for big trouble. For me, they'd be better off playing with a diamond in midfield and two forwards up front.

iNickStuffInvestment into the team by Andre Villas-Boas would probably provide the width. Whomever he brings in would probably be wingers and remove the unnecessary attack of a left back in the form of Ashley Cole.

thebeautifulgame11Perfevtly the concept where the fullbacks will attack but don't see Chelsea going with two DM's. Lampard as an attacking midfield is not a good option any longer. Also yoiu cannot play both Torres And Drogba together which is alos.. To accomodate both of them it's quite difficult.

iNickStuffThey aren't defensive midfielders, they are central midfielders with a balanced attacking and defensive mentality. Similar to Holland's formation with the pairing of Mark van Bommel and Nigel de Jong. They rotate roles in marshalling the midfield.

And again, it's similar to Holland's formation. Lampard isn't totally an attacking midfielder, but rather an attacking central midfieler - relates to the role Xavi has for the national team and the role he played within Del Bosque's Tiki-Taka formation during the World Cup.

Torres and Drogba won't frequently play together, but rather in rotation. More Torres than Drogba, but one of them will be the centre of everything and speahead the attack.

JimmyGuitarist4-2-3-1 is one of my best formations. It looks defensive on paper, but it's one of the most versatile formations.
I don't think Andre Villas-Boas will use it though. He'll use his usual formaton; 4-3-3. I've never liked watching Chelsea, typical English style of football. But Villas-Boas sounds promising. Apparently, he's a fan of the Barca way, and I've heard him talking about Pep Guardiola and Johan Cruyff.
