king1319Gasperini’s love for the 3-4-3 got me thinking, what teams would look like in 343
Chelsea and Arsenal

ThiagoFSR833-4-3: you're asking to being destroyed!

the middle line will be broken easyly!

you'll better try a 3-3-1-3 like Cruyff did in Ajax and Barcelona, and is the sistem Guardiola uses at Barça against 4-4-2!

even a WM (3-2-2-3) is a better sistem!!

as you can see in the image, the number 2 and number 6, as carrileros can defende against the opposition wingers, and help in the attack, making 2v1s situations against the full backs.

As a matter of fact, the playmaker behind the second line is a huge problem.

Adding the fact that, 3 deffender are terrible against 433/451 sistems

king1319I completely agree, In both cases I have noted, one mid will stay deep and and the other advances. To be honest these selections were more of a mockery of a 343, I believe a good team/formation should always have 4 at the back, or 4 primary defenders.

ThiagoFSR83Of course, the back 4 is the best way to defend.

HOWEVER, the best way to play is to MOVE. I.e., if you ara playing against a 2 fowards formation, you always have, at least, one full back free.

Here, in Brazil, some managers, when the team attacks, usually drop the holder midfielder to the back line, giving full backs license to atack.

it means that, if the team is a 4-3-1-2 defending, it becomes a 3-4-1-2 attacking. Or, a 4-3-3 becomes a 3-3-1-3.

Other managers prefer to, as we call in Portuguese, "bascular", it is, only one full back attack, and the 3 backs that left in the defence line go to the center to cover the empty space.

winjer3-4-3 would work better for chelsea, simply because a defensive trio of mertesacker, vermealen and koscielny is a recipe for disaster - not enough speed and agility (assuming sagna and santos would have fully attacking duties)

nvrOur first choice defenders never seem to be fit all at the same time. Even experimenting with this is just a dream.

king1319@thiagofsr83
I am actually a big fan of that style of play, I have seen benfica play like that and it is good in attack, the holder has to be disciplined, and Garcia certainly seems so.

@winjer
song at cb(sweeper) instead of merta would definately help. you would have TV on the left, he plays leftback for belguim and kosc on the right, I think he played some rightback in france. That wouldnt be too bad. Or even Djorou, despite his clumsiness he is pretty fast for a cb

@nvr
Yes definately an experiment, wouldnt want to risk our centrebacks so much. A question for you though. Were do you think our current list centrebacks rank amonst what we have had over the drought. in past years, if Toure/Gallas was unavailable we would look horrible at the back, I think our cb's are not as bad as the defence looks like it is

05.10.2011

nvrMertesacker is better than Gallas, at the very least mentally. Squilacci was a stop gap measure so I don't really want to put him in a comparison.

Our biggest problem in this areas is again the unavailability of key players. Vermaalen should be cut off if he spends another absentee year.

05.10.2011

king1319Agreed on TV, seems he caught the van Persi injury virus

07.10.2011

Janne HI would prefer 4-2-3-1 or this 4-3-3

I believe we could have mutch more solid defending with this def.line. Iva and Luiz can both play RB role.

09.10.2011

king1319Yes that looks really solid, Luiz would bring exactly what is needed in attack that Ivanovic just cant bring

09.10.2011

Janne HNot only in attack he is also lot more solid in defense than Bosingwa and thats what i would want to see in our def.line...solid defending. Bosingwa is only average defender and thats not good enough when playing against big teams.

09.10.2011

chicarooneyIt might have worked

01.11.2011

chicarooney3-4-3 is the most risky formation in the game its just far too attacking.
