jmancubsfanSo if you haven't seen any of my other posts, I'm trying to build a good formation for my adult recreational league team. So far I've established I need 4 backs to prevent from repeating our feat of most goals allowed in the last 10 seasons. And I've established that I have the perfect player for the Makelele role. As I've mentioned we need to be able to hide some weaker players, likely on the outside positions, so let me here your suggestions. I would really like to do well in the midfield to prevent our games from becoming offense vs. defense on both halves without the ability to contain a counter. Should I go with a 4-1-3-2, a 4-3-1-2, a 4-1-2-3 or maybe just a 4-3-3? Any feedback is appreciated but try to include the setup I've already started...

FeriAtsI would probably go for a 4-4-1-1 in your case. You seem to be conceding too many goals, you have to stop that. Do not worry about the games becoming offense vs defense, at least until you steady the ship.

Pick up a single attacking plan to use when you gain posession. The oldest trick in the book is to focus on set pieces. Your attacking players would focus on getting a corner or free kick around the box. If you spend some time for set pieces in the training and develop a couple of tricks, you can score a lot more than you might imagine.

When you put a couple of draws and a win or two under your belt, you can start looking into commiting more into attacking.

jmancubsfanI forgot to mention that since this league is just an adult league for fun, there are no practices... usually. But that doesn't mean I couldn't work up a set piece or two and try it out before the game. Thanks for the tips, I hadn't thought about that aspect much lately. I'm curious about the 4-4-1-1 though, I'll have to commit some time to researching it before I can decide if it will be effective in my league and with the players I will have.

FeriAtsHave a look at Sam Alerdyce's Bolton. Maybe you can find videos of their games from 2 years ago. He is pretty good at getting results with a weak squad.
