outsiderdfI think this formation is one that can cover the whole field with hardly any weaknesses. YOu can say only three defenders but the CDM plays a defensive role as a stopper.

Ricardo3-4-3 diamond, I like it. It's a great attacking formation ... we've used it when there's 10 mins to go and we're down a goal. As you say, CDM has to be ready to drop back and be the second centre back.
Another option is to go 3-5-2 with two def mids and three attacking mids, very flexible and plenty of possession in the midfeild. Or use two fast wingbacks :)

FeriAtsI wrote my thoughts about 3 men defenses under this topic before:

You'd really need a very good bunch of players to make this formation work in real life.

Robert O'CarlosDepends how you see the defensive midfielder playing, I guess. For me, I'd prefer to play this as a 4-3-3 with a sweeper behind 3 backs.

RoberticusThis is the system that Fabregas, Iniesta and Xavi were reared in at Barcelona youth level
This was a modification of the Dutch 4-3-3 system at the Ajax school. Coaches like Cruyff and Van Gaal brough it to even further attacking extremes.
Chile's coach Marcelo Bielsa prefers to call his version of it 3-3-1-3. It demands intense pressing high up the pitch especially from the forwards, and also an extgremely high defensive line...basically playing inside the opponents' half. It requires incredible technical precision and rapid ball circulation since one slip or dispossession can result in a counter-attack and goal.
