trane333A cross between a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1, Leonardo played something like it in the 2009-2011 version of AC Milan. Borriello being the CF, and Pato and Ronaldinho playing on each side.

This formation is build to defend first, hold the ball , and quickly turn into a quick attack. The CF should be big and strong, able to keep the ball, pass the ball, and quickly turn and shoot, take space and out muscles the CBs. Drogba ( the sice of a traditional English target man but with finish) is the type of striker that comes to mind. The two SS are what in Italy are called trequaristi, creative quick and efficient attacking players, Pato, Cassano, and Del Piero are the type. Speed is needed, as there are no real wingers, the SS will have to provide width and pace, as needed. The CM is a two way general, solid in defending, great passer, and creative and efficient. Must support attack, and be first line of defense. Essien and Pirlo come to mind. DMs are defense first players, great tacklers, sure passers, who try to cut the field for the opposition, and support the attack. Gattuso and RK at their peak comes to mind.

The fullbacks are defense first, but must have speed and the ability to bring the ball up the field quickly and cross pass efficiently, their roles are akin to defensive WB. CBs are big defensive, classic CB that can pass, control the line. The DMs and CBs should have similar qualities in that they should be aggressive, defensively solid, BUT that can pass and start counters well, with a good pass. Long balls are not a feature of the system. Passing and possession and runs into space as it is available. SS should play wide to be available to passes from FB Keeping shape should be easy. If shape is kept and movement of the players is good, to ensure availability of passing options, a shot of goal, can be achieved in few passes from the back line.

trane333I am not sure why my avatar is Platini. Great player, but I would have chosed Baresi or Maldini.
