Coentrão and Dani Alvis are not real full-backs,
in Brazil we call them "LATERAIS" (singular: lateral), which means "sider"
they should defend and attack well, and both Coentrão and Alves are offensive 'laterais', they wouldn't keep position in defense.
That's why Alves is not the first choice in Brazil National team, Brazil's number 2 (the "official" number for the right full-back in Brazil) is Maicon, who can defends better than Alves.

SanzIf you want 3 at the back, 1 playmaker and 2 strikers, the most normal would be to play the other four as a band, in a 3-4-1-2. This works particularly well against 4-4-2.

DioWhen you talk about three in the back, it really means that you have to keep three centre backs at the back!(David Luiz, Terry and Alex, for an example) To give more freedom for yours rigth and left backs to attack.
Playing 3 at back is also good to use when team have possession. Thats why in Barcelona, when they have the ball, Busquets sometimes drops back to improve the possesion in the first third and to give Alves and Adriano more agressivity.

elhinchadelsurYpu're playing actually with just one defender. Dani Alves and Fabio Coentrao should support the attack. And, more than this, Bale and Coentrao could play as wing back. You should take off the team Donovan or Bale, and put someone to be a defensive midfielder, so free Kaka to be the playmaker. And, in my opinion, I should put a defender like Terry, Ferdinand or even Puyol, in the place of Donovan or Bale too, so you could play with Cech; Dani Alves, David Luiz, Defender, and Fabio Coentrao/Bale; Defensive Midfielder(Instead of Donovan or Bale), Essien, Kaka; Suarez, Rooney and Torres.
