With their defense sitting deep and by making the defensive and midfield lines very compact, Botafogo wouldn't allow Santos to play through-balls or allow their attackers to have time on the ball.
Gerson dictated play by hitting long balls exploiting his master technique and vision as well as Jairzinho's power and speed, wich Santos' backline couldn't handle. Élton, Arlindo and Gérson would take turns making runs towards the box, in a more gradual alternative build-up play.
Garrincha, who wasn't fully fit, was quiet during the game due to his imobility. This forced both Roberto and Jairzinho to compensate the lack of movement and tracking back.
Jairzinho scored the first goal after an accurate long pass by Gérson. Roberto Miranda scored twice: the second goal was a beauty and the first was produced by Arlindo.

eu sabia que tinha nascida em Gal Severiano - muito mais pela perda de fôlego de Zagallo que não conseguia mais fazer o vai-volta e ficou de winger esquerdo no Botafogo e na copa de 1962, o que faria, em 66, a Inglaterra implementar o mesmo esquema q o Brasil de 62, mas pelos dois lados, o ponteiro no meio-campo -.
e o mais incrível ainda! Jairzinho era um falso 9? Roberto Miranda que era centro-avante jogava de ponta esquerda pra Jairzinho poder entrar?
