TheNearPostThis lineup is meant to be a hybrid of a 4-4-2 and a 4-3-3. On defense, Dempsey plays as a right wing-forward. When the USA wins the ball back, he pushes up level with Altidore, or drops into the hole. Donovan forms a central trio with Torres and Jones when out of possession, and has freedom to drift into the hole or push wide in attack. Shea plays a more typical wide midfield role on the opposite flank, making Chandler's lack of a left foot less detrimental.
The issue we've seen under Klinsmann, in my opinion anyways, is that we've had a lot of possession of the ball, but not a lot of support for thr striker. Moreover, the wingers we've played in our 4-3-3, specifically Rogers, have been less than impressive. Shea was actually quite good, if you ask me, but seemed to tire.
