TheNearPostTake a look. It's a mix of a 4-3-2-1 and a 4-2-3-1 really. Johnson defends as a central midfielder, but makes runs to the right flank when the USA has the ball ( a role called a "carrilero" - check this article by Zonal Marking for some good reading on the role http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/03/03/analysing-brazils-fluid-system-at-close-quarters/ ). This allows the rest of the USA midfield to narrow up a bit more, although Donovan can certainly drift wide left himself.
