TheNearPostThe real point of interest in this line up is the use of Altidore in relation to Dempsey. When the USA is defending, Altidore would drift into the channel between the opponents' left fullback and left center back. This can either pin the fullback into his own half, concerned that he will leave to much space for Altidore, or it will leave Altidore in space when the USA wins the ball back. Going forward, Altidore will look to make runs from that channel in behind the defense. Should the fullback mark Dempsey, Altidore is completely open, but if he doesn't, then Dempsey can is left free.

The general idea is for there to be some variation in this squads movement. Dempsey will look to join Donovan between lines, and Shea will hug the touchline, but both of them will try to make direct runs into dangerous spots in the backline. Donovan, on the other hand, will be more focused on finding spaces to receive the ball between lines and playing clever passes into the other three attackers ( as well as Bradley) that crack open the defense. That's really the kind of role and environment that Donovan functions in. There has to be a constant kineticism.
