danmarti3 man spearhead plays very high up the pitch. Intended to overwhelm opposing centre backs. Central midfielder sits deep and provides long balls for fullback raids and balls over the defence. Defensive midfielders protect centre backs and provide cover for attacking fullbacks.

ZolaChristmas tree formation is played with 2 wingers rather than attacking midfielders. Think Robben and Duff under Mourinho.

danmartiActually that was more of a modified 433. I was referring to the Milan formation of the mid 2000s under Ancelotti, the 4321 with Cafu/Oddo and Jankulovski as wingbacks.

danmartiSorry, my mistake (getting the fullbacks mixed up in it) but the -2- for Milan consisted of Kaka and Clarence Seedorf, who are both attacking central midfielders. With wingers it becomes a 433 as in Chelsea.

ZolaI don't really follow AC Milan very closely, but didn't they almost always played with two strikers up front? Scheva, Gilardino, Inzaghi used to share the load, no?

danmartiIt varies. They often used to use Sheva as a lone striker to start games and if that wasn't working they would sub an attacking mid for Pippo or someone else. The point is a double AM formation is perfect for a 2 Centre Back defence, because they play between midfiend and defence, so either one of the opposing midfielders has to play deep weakening their midfield, or one of the CBs has to play high, which leaves a hole in the back line.

Vinicius_BernoMilan - Dida, Cafu(Oddo), Nesta, Maldini, Jankulovski, Pirlo, Gattuso, Ambrosini, Kaká, Seedorf and Shevchenko.

And, at Second Half, Inzaghi subs Ambrosini, and Milan go to 4-2-2-2
