TheNearPostThe real tactical intrigue in this lineup is the way the shape moves between a back four and a back three. On defense, the USA is in a typical 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1 shape. When the USA has the ball, Chandler pushes forward up the right flank, while the rest of the backline slides over. In combination with Shea moving wide left, this contributes to the back three look. This allows Donovan to play narrower and link up with Dempsey.

I'd say this lineup suits the USA. Chandler and Shea are clearly very dangerous running at the opposition fullbacks, and the width they provide allows the rest of the USA midfield to play closer to eachother and play the ball around their opponents in the central midfield. Dempsey is in a second forward role that is actually slightly left-ish, which is where he likes it. The biggest thing is how this suits the USA's backline. There is pace at the backline with Cameron and there is someone to deal with more physical strikers with Onyewu. Bocanegra is still there to provide leadership/organization and overall good defensive ability. I think it'd do well.
