RicardoI was toying with this idea or Australia:

Three centre backs
Two wing backs (more like wide midfielders who track back to defend)
A defensive midfielder
An attacking midfielder
Two wingers
& a forward to hold the ball up

I don't know if you'd call it 5-2-3 or 3-4-3 but I think it would suit the play of the Aussies and would help possession.

What do you think?

RedrebelThis formation does work because you have a back 5. It is very difficult to score on a team that has a back 5. Also you got defensive midfielder which would probably just remain defensive holding midfield and supporting the back 3. Another good thing about this formation is that you have 2 wingers which means lots of crosses and you got an attacking midfielder which will act as forward and score goals too. So, this formation is pretty good congratulations you won the lottery. By the way this is a 5-2-3.

CaptainGerardI'd rather stick to a 4 men defensive line. Neill and Emerton have heaps of experience with variants of 442 and I'd use it.

sp88I've seen Internazionale play something very similar to this. Not sure it lasted too long.
