Xavi used to play that more defensive role earlier in his career, but it's obviously not the way to get the best from him. Guardiola is always going to play one of Busquets, Keita and Toure to add defensive strength to the midfield three.

Similarly, I cannot see Villa playing on the left wing often when they have Pedro and Jeffren who are specialists in that position. He is surely going to be fighting for the centre forward spot with Ibra, assuming Ibra stays.
