bradg11Possible Chelsea 4-2-3-1. Lampard could also move to CAM with Mata at RAM and McEachran/Modric coming into RDM.

I like what you've drawn up, mate. To have the attack go through Mata would leave a lot of options open going forward as displayed here. If we can bring in Modric, he'd be a perfect fit at right wing where Anelka is and he'd be able to open up even more possibilities. Switch out Torres for Drogba or Lukaku and you add another element in the form of size and strength at the center-forward slot.

bradg11Thanks.
I think Modric has gone towards a more deep seated playmaker style of player in recent years rather than an attacking midfielder. So he'd probably slot in where Lampard is.

If that's so, then I think a 4-3-3 would be a more suitable formation for Chelsea. It would allow Mata to move to his more natural left wing position while allowing the midfielders to do what they do best. Give Modric the freedom to create chances, while Lampard attacks the box and Essien (or whoever the DM is; probably Mikel or Romeu) patrols the outside in case we lose possession. Though I doubt those two can crank 'em from distance like Essien, at least not yet. ;)

bradg11Yeah, I still think 4-3-3 is Chelsea's most balanced formation with the diamond midfield and 4-2-3-1 to be used as plan's B and C. That front 3 you have look's sweet. Sturridge could challenge Anelka for a spot. Also it look's like Mata has come in as a direct replacement for Malouda at LW as they're trying to offload him.
In the midfield 4-3-3 I'd go with a holder (Mikel or Romeu) and Lampard and Ramires as the 2 CM's. Modric could slot in where Ramires is if signed and Essien would also compete for a position at CM once he's back. Josh McEachran could also play CM.

padI don't see why we want Modric so much. I like our 4 3 3. with Ramires tirelessly running up and down the pitch and Lampard/Yossi/Josh being able to play as the attacking midfielder (each in their own way) the only position I see him fitting into is the defensive midfielder. Technically he'd play well there but probably no better than Mikel and we have already bought Oriol Romeu to play there as well. We need a player as support for Ramires in that box to box role. Modric playing as the right CM would mean we'd lose the Energy of Ramires and replace him with some playing a very similar role to Mikel. Distribution. Right now we have a (mostly) solid defence, with plenty of competition. I wouldn't change a thing there. the holding position for us provides us with cover and Mikel getting the ball to the wings or to the CM's in front of him. With Lampard looking to score goals and Ramires keeping the ball moving as well as running into space, causing defenders to panic it creates room for Torres and Sturridge on the right to receive the crosses Mata will make. I think we have the players and the system to win games we just need to get used to it. If lampard needs to be rested Josh or Yossi can cover. Josh is more likely to put in a killer pass than a goal and Yossi is somewhere in between. We'll get goals from Lampard, Torres and Sturridge on a regular basis and from Mata and Ramires as well. If Josh is playing it can increase the amount of goals from the front three due to his tendency to pass. We do have flexibility if 4 3 3 doesn't work but it hasn't won us three titles by accident. I think playing with two strikers can be effective against teams like Stoke, WBA and Sunderland but maybe with a diamond midfield rather than a standard one. but against the big team in europe and the league i want to play 4 3 3. especially now we have an added dimension to it.
