nvrFabio Capello is Italian, you know... Italians play with at least 4 defenders, 5 being the more common. I cannot imagine Capello adopting a 3 men defensive line. And neither Terry, nor Ferdinand, nor Woodgate have the capability to adapt 3 men formation.

bobbehWell -

It's called innovation -

And -

Barry and Hargreaves can drop in at LB and RB when under the cosh against the big boys, making it a 5-4-1.

nvrWell-

National team-

is not the place to innovate-

And-

It is now a proven fact that Lampard and Gerards cannot play together. What we need is a a manager with some balls, who can keep one of these chaps with him on the bench. I don't really care who sits, but one should.

This formation of yours is an invitation for disaster. Maybe we can try it against Andorra for some time but that's really as much as it can go.

bobbehItalia 90 - Wright, Walker, Butcher - innovation!! - And - that was the semi final against the krauts!!!

tut tut....

I agree Lamps and Stevie G can't do it in a 4-4-2 but that was under Sven and Umbrella Man where one had to sit - this is with cover (X2) in behind them so they can both roam free, and they can all interchange - Bentley, Gerrard and Hargreaves taking turns at right wing back, sitting at CM, right wing - Its the future - see Man Utd/Roma 07/08

What capabilities do you need to be part of a back 3? As far as I see they are all good on the ball and Woody and Rio have the pace to cover. Sadly Terry hasn't but he's there as Lescott and Richards aren't international class yet (maybe) and Gladis and Baked Bean Head just don't cut the mustard.

The weak link is the lack of pace in Barry and Terry....

nvrLet me explain:

Ferdinand, Terry or Woodgate are not the most physical of players in their teams, are they? They are not the fastest either and not the most technical.Yet they are the best defenders in the country. Why? Because they have the game reading and anticipation skills. Plus they have the experience.

If you put them in a formation which they are not used to, all of a sudden, their game reading and anticipation start to seem not so strong. These skills are sharpened with lots of practice and experience. If you take out the experience factor out, they start to look like a midfielder covering the back. Dodgy marking, bad timing, hessitant passing...You name it.

In modern football, defense is the last place you'd wnat to take risks. I am not against innovation, as long as it doesn't happen in defensive formations.
