RedrebelTo me nowdays it looks like the most popular formations are the 4-4-2 and 4-3-3. I personally hate the 4-4-2, though it can be played very effectively against other formations. In the other hand I love the 4-3-3 because it is more versatile and most of the time more offensive because most teams that use the 4-3-3 are offensive teams like Barcelona, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Brazil, Portugal, etcet. Which is your favorite?

theformationnerd123my favourite formation is 4-4-2. i accualty also like 4-3-3.
why 4-4-2?. i liked the way to play a 4-4-2. i think that 2 attackers is to go center or sides. there always free in the attacking position. and having 2 in the center two in the attack and two on the wings.
why 4-3-3?. well Barcelona in always to play 4-3-3 no doubt about that. but chelsea used to play 4-4-2 when mourinho was with chelsea. im not taking down the 4-3-3 system but its just closing the wings. alot of people plays on the sides. even Spanish league plays more on the sides.

RedrebelThe 4-3-3 is better than the 4-4-2 no doubt about it.

Robert O'CarlosFor me, a back 4 is best when you have a midfield sitter protecting the play through the middle, with the full backs looking to attack the wings. That would lend itself more favourably to a 4-3-3 (or 4-1-?-?) so I'd have to go with 4-3-3 between the 2 choices. You'd need to keep the width somehow though.

FeriAtsIf you have 3 midfield players, who can run 6 miles a game each, tackle and pass, you can afford to play 4-3-3. The problem is these super mids are not dime a dozen.

Robert O'CarlosIt's a fair point.
:-D
Probably explains why you don't tend to see too much messing about with formations in the lower leagues.

RedrebelWhat about 3-4-3?
13.01.2009
FeriAtsIf I were to play a 3 men defense ever, I'd go for a 3-5-2. A crowded midfield might compansate for a underpowered back line. 3-4-3 does not provide that.
14.01.2009
RedrebelThe question is, how do you know the 3-4-3 does not provide that?

FeriAtsSee my previous post about running, tackling and passing.

Robert O'CarlosNot quite sure how we got to discussing 3-4-3 versus 3-5-2 in a thread entitled 'Which is your favorite? 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 and why?'
:-D
The thing I like about the 3-5-2 is the fact that, as long as the wing backs don't get too far forward, it translates to 5-3-2 very easily. In much the same way as 4-4-2 becomes 2-4-4 when attacking.
