hchoWhich was the last EPL team that played with 3 defenders. I can't remember any. This will probably fail big time.

HulbiHey Hcho,
you have a valid point but you havnt noticed Benayoun and Mascherano i believe. They are not completely acting as midfielders. They have been kept at this position to provid complete support to Pennant and Aurelio. Thats the beauty of the Christmas Tree formation. Even Babel and Kuyt support Finnan as well as Gerrard. You could divide this formation with two vertical lines on either side of Torres - Gerrard - Finnan - Carragher. The players on the outside of this lines are supporting the center players.

sp88If you're playing a back 3, you need 3 good defenders there - Aurelio is average at best (and left footed playing at right back!) and Pennant is a winger and would be completely out of position at the back.
Benayoun plays best when going forward and would be wasted as a holding player.
Finnan wouldn't feel comfortable that far up the pitch - he's a defender 1st and is better playing behind and supporting players doing the attacking ahead of him.
Can't argue with the front 4 - I'd play Babel out wider to stretch defenses and make runs. I'd probably have Pennant or Benayoun where you've got Kuyt, but only because Kuyt hasn't been so good this season.
If I was playing against this time, I'd be using a 5 man midfield with 2 very wide wingers supporting a lone striker (who'd really only have Carragher to get past).
