U.S. coach Bob Bradley played a 4-4-2 / 4-4-1-1 formation that had experienced defenders Carlos Bocanegra and Steve Cherundolo alongside younger and lesser-experienced heads, Clarence Goodman and Aston Villa's Eric Lichaj. The midfield contrived of two central midfielders and a defensive midfielder. Jermaine Jones, Michael Bradley and Alejandro Bedoya. Bedoya shuffled in and out of the left-wing, and sometimes played central to create a 4-5-1 formation.

Fulham's Clint Dempsey was put out as a second-striker / attacking midfielder that drops into the wings to provide width, and swapped at times with ex-Dallas United forward Freddy Adu. Landon Donovan spearheaded the attack as the main striker, whilst all passes and plays went through the centre.
