dylanjamesbellmy belief is that in modern football a holding midfielder and an attacking midfielder is needed in a team to become 'world class'.. which is why i think teams such as Barcelona are finding so much success.
The '3' is my favorite ever formation because it offers 1 holding midfielder in either Carrick,Jones or Pogba.. 1 central midfielder in either Anderson, Giggs or Fletcher... and one attacking midfielder/false no.9 in Rooney (there are other attacking midfielders but rooney would be the obvious choice).
I think this would solve United's 'midfield problem' because it would offer a good balance between attack and defense!
p.s. there are some players missing from the line-up such as Berbatov,Evans,Lindegaard,Park,Diouf,Cleverley and Owen.. i just couldn't fit them all on to one pitch!

IceFalconFor your information, teams that use the False Nine system do not actually use another striker...... The False Nine is so popular because you have two players in one, a sort of striker and a CF. And you put Rooney in midfield, that's not his natural position. That's why United should buy Sneijder.

mojojojo101Playing 3 in midfield is not at all neccesary in modern football... thier are plenty of ways of controlling a game without squashing as many players into the centre of the pitch (eg. narrow wingers, deep-lying strikers, ball playing defenders, etc).
SAF has come up with a clever hybrid of a 4-4-2, a 4-4-1-1 and a 4-2-3-1 which means that the team is still able to keep 2 energetic and tricky wide players, aswell as using Rooney in his strongest role allowing us to keep competitive in the midfield.
The only problem is when an out an out attacking midfielder is deployed as Vidic and Ferdinand are no longer particularly comfortable playing high up the pitch (highlighted most obvioulsy against Arsenal at the Emirates last season)... however United have the depth and versatillity to quickly change to a 4-5-1 in order to counter such a threat.
